WINTER ACTIVITIES, SERRE CHEVALIER

One of Europe’s oldest and largest ski resorts. The long, south facing valley of Serre Chevalier stretches between Col du Lautaret and Briançon. The Chantemerle téléphérique, or cable car, was Serre Chevalier’s first ski lift and at the time it opened in 1941 was the longest in Europe. By the 1950’s the resort was firmly established and really began to flourish.

Comprising the 4 interlinked villages of Le Monétier Les Bains, Villeneuve and Chantemerle and the historic town of Briançon, the resort offers a huge range of activities throughout the year.

The unique microclimate brings an abundance of snow providing excellent ski conditions throughout the winter season. Fortunately, the Mediterranean climate is never far away, there are approximately 300 days of annual sunshine. With clear blue skis, outstanding air quality and panoramic views in every direction, Serre Chevalier is rightly regarded as one of Europe’s finest ski resorts.

Off the slopes take time to explore the rich heritage of the region; the beautiful medieval town of Briançon with its cobbled streets, sundials and Provençal coloured buildings. Plus, unique to the area of the Hautes-Alpes, are the Natural Thermal Baths in Monêtier-les-Bains: waters are naturally heated to around 45°C and reputed to be both healing and rejuvenating – especially after a hard day on the mountain.

Situated on the edge of the Les Ecrins National Park, guests at the Grand Hotel can enjoy a variety of other activities.
