At the heart of Briançon is the fortified old town, dominated by the Fort du Chateau. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the medieval town dates to around 800 BC. Its imposing forts and defences, much enlarged from 1700 under the direction of renowned military architect Vauban, give the town an enchanting feel and are well worth exploring. At 1320m altitude it is the second highest city in Europe giving it a unique architectural style. Take time out from exploring to relax in one of the many cafes, bars and restaurants.
Una nueva perspectiva alpina
No special training is required – you just need to know how to walk! A choice of walks, suitable for all abilities and fitness levels, is a different way to explore the natural beauty of Les Ecrins Parc and Serre Chevalier Vallée. One of our favourite walks is along the valley floor between the villages of Le Monétier Les Bains, through Villeneuve onto Chantemerle. Each village on this relatively gentle route has its own little hidden gems including the 11th century Chapel St Arnould in Chantemerle with its beautiful frescos or take a break for a warming coffee and watch the world go by as the mountains soar above you.
